Last spring, my husband and I made an ottoman for our living room, and I have struggled with what to put "on" the ottoman ever since! I have tried out several blankets (because I wanted something to break up the solid color of the ottoman and add some texture) but they always ended up too big or too lumpy when folded, especially since we like to keep a tray on the ottoman for coffee cups and other things when we have guests over.
I was looking for something that would add some warmth and "hygge" (hue-guh, the popular Danish art of creating coziness : ) to our living room for the winter. My mom has the cutest faux fur throw on an ottoman in her home, and I was telling my sister that I wanted one but the size I needed was a little pricey (our ottoman is 36x36 and I wanted it to hang over the edges as well). So I really have to credit my sister with this idea! She suggested that I buy "faux fur" fabric from Hobby Lobby and cut my own throw.
I was a little hesitant that the fabric wouldn't look very good in person, but it was exactly what I had in mind. I was also worried that it would shed a lot or wouldn't be very good quality, but I was hopeful. I purchased 1 1/2 yards and when the lady cut the fabric, a LOT of fur came off the cut edge (and I started to question my decision!). She swiped her hand along the edge and grabbed the loose fur, and I haven't had any shedding issues since! The fabric was $16.99 per yard, and I used my 40% off coupon to snag 1 1/2 yards for only $16.21 total.
I initially intended to cut the edges of the fabric to have more of an organic shape (and I still may do that eventually) but I am happy with the straight edges for now. There isn't a whole lot of "DIY" to this project, but after having people compliment the throw and say "I never would have thought to do that," it seemed like a good idea to share.
The tray on the ottoman was a TJ Maxx find. I loved the geometric shape, but the wood on the tray needs repair (I bought it at a discount!) so my husband is cutting a new piece of wood to go inside. As far as how the throw is holding up, I have been SO happy! It has been well loved on by both of our boys and still looks brand new.
I hope this helps someone else add a little "hygge" to their home! It was definitely a quick and inexpensive fix for us, and added a ton of warmth to our living space.
